Selected Photos
Here are some photographs from my various travels. In addition to travel (especially to historical places), I enjoy reading, writing, hiking, running, family history, and culture (theater, art, museums, and the like).
I'll add to these photos from time to time. Enjoy!

Resting in a fire tower while hiking in the Adirondacks. I love the color change in the Northeast in the fall.

Re-enactment of the Civil-War-era Battle of Aiken. They perform every February. The year I attended the cannon they fired set the grounds on fire. People actually thought it was part of the show.

Water garden beside the mansion at Biltmore, the old Vanderbilt country home. Completed in 1895, the estate is massive. My favorite room is the library, and not just because it's the biggest room in the place!

An inviting place to sit and reflect in one of many gardens at Biltmore.

One of many nature trails at Biltmore. I should have brought my running shoes!

Re-creation of The Adventure on the site of the first permanent English settlement in Carolina. They actually crossed the Atlantic in that small of a boat.

View of Charleston Harbor from the Battery. Charleston is one of my favorite cities. I passed by this spot during the first 5k that I ran from beginning to end.

The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. I'm not a huge sports fan, but this place is a shrine of American culture.

Oswego Hall in Cooperstown, home to James Fenimore Cooper. Of course, I had to stop by while in town. I also visited the Fenimore Art Museum, which at the time had a wonderful Grandma Moses exhibit.

Most cats don't care for ham and broccoli quiche. Tashi, on the other hand, has good taste. Oh, and real men don't just eat quiche; they make it.

A great view of the Washington Monument behind some trees on the Capitol Mall.

As a metallurgist who loves history, I find it hard to resist hanging out with the blacksmith whenever I see one.

The Washington Light Infantry Monument, erected on the site of the Revolutionary-War-era Battle of Cowpens. Erected in 1856, time has weathered away its original appearance. A larger monument appears beside the visitor's center, but this one attracts me more.

Tashi looking at her first snow in Seattle. Seattle is another of my favorite cities.

Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Major Robert Anderson, the commanding officer, had real guts. He refused to leave his post when the Confederates offered him the opportunity to leave peacefully.

Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Martin Luther King Jr. preached here as did his father. The MLK National Historic Site is just across the street.

Lake Coeur d'Alene as seen from the north. I hiked to the top of Mineral Ridge for the view.

The Statue of Liberty. Access to the crown and the torch were restricted during my visit. But it was still incredible to see.

Green Lake in Seattle. The trail around the lake offers one of my all-time favorite places to run.

My cat Tashi loved looking out windows. She never went outside unless she was in a carrier.

The home of Carl Sandberg. The house is perfectly preserved from the day he died, including the box of 1960s Kleenex in the front room. There is also a wonderful theater right across the street.

Some days I feel just like this walrus at SeaWorld in San Diego.

The Mecca of American Chocoholics. Factory tours once showed actual production runs. Now they have a "special" building where they guide you by rail car through a simulated plant floor together with cows who make the candy. Though I was disappointed that the real thing was no longer available, I was glad that the tour still finished with free samples.
